Emerson Fittipaldi, a Brazilian racing legend who won the Formula 1 world championship twice and the Indianapolis 500, developed a close friendship with Ayrton Senna during their time in the sport. Fittipaldi first met Senna when he was just 14 years old and invited him into the Copersucar Fittipaldi garage during a test at Interlagos. Despite being shy and quiet, Senna made a lasting impression on Fittipaldi, who became his guide and confidant.

In 1969, Fittipaldi’s F3 mechanic introduced him to Ralph Firman, who later co-founded Van Diemen, a successful Formula Ford chassis builder. When Senna expressed interest in racing in England, Fittipaldi recommended him to Firman, declaring that Senna would win the championship. Firman initially chuckled at the suggestion, but Fittipaldi’s prediction would soon prove to be accurate.

Fittipaldi’s mentorship and support played a crucial role in Senna’s career, as he navigated the challenges of racing in different countries and championships. Their bond grew stronger over the years, with Fittipaldi serving as a trusted friend and advisor to Senna as he pursued his dreams in the world of motorsport.
