The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Introduces New Siebel School of Computing and Data Science within The Grainger College of Engineering

Chancellor Robert J. Jones of the University of Illinois highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative work in research and education for computing and data science. The establishment of the Siebel School of Computing & Data Science, made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Siebel, will help shape the future of technology and prepare students for success in a digital world.

Nancy M. Amato, Computer Science Department Head and Abel Bliss Professor of Engineering, expressed gratitude for the support from Mr. Siebel, which has provided new opportunities for the computing and data science community at the university to thrive. Students and faculty have been involved in groundbreaking developments such as the first modern web browser, PayPal, YouTube, Siebel Systems, C3 AI, and Yelp, and will continue to pursue innovation in the field.

The focus of the new Siebel School of Computing & Data Science will be on advancing frontiers at the intersections of computing and data science, building on the university’s history of computing innovation. The school is currently pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, with a goal of providing new and accessible pathways for students to pursue education in computing.
