The United States was reportedly willing to accept the Israeli plan for an operation in Rafah in exchange for Israel not launching a major attack on Iran in retaliation for an Iranian raid on Israel. According to the Qatari publication Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Egyptian officials quoted in the article stated that preparations were underway to allow Egypt to deal with any possible impact of the planned operation.

Additionally, the New York Times reported that Israeli officials miscalculated Iran’s response to an attack that destroyed Tehran’s consulate in Damascus, potentially leading to a dangerous escalation in the region. US officials were reportedly angry that they were only informed minutes before the Israeli attack and were not told its significance. According to the New York Times, the plans for the attack began two months before it was carried out and was approved by Israel’s war cabinet.

The situation highlights the delicate and complex relationships between the United States, Israel, Iran, and other countries involved in the region. Tensions and miscalculations can have significant consequences, emphasizing the need for careful diplomacy and communication to avoid further escalation and conflict.
