Topsoe has entered into an agreement with Cepsa to supply its HydroFlex™ technology for the production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and renewable diesel. The technology will be implemented at Cepsa’s new second-generation biofuels plant in Palos de la Frontera, Spain.

Elena Scaltritti, chief commercial officer at Topsoe, expressed excitement about being chosen as the technology provider for this important project. There is a growing demand for SAF and renewable diesel, but supply is currently insufficient. Scaltritti highlighted the significance of renewable fuels in supporting the energy transition, especially in sectors like long-distance transportation that are challenging to electrify. Cepsa’s efforts in decarbonizing the transportation sector are commendable, and Topsoe is proud to collaborate with them.

Construction of the plant began in February 2024, and it is anticipated to produce 500,000 tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel annually. This expansion will double the total renewable fuels production capacity of Cepsa and Bio-Oils to 1 million tons per year, establishing one of the largest renewable fuel complexes in Southern Europe.

José Manuel Martínez, director of technology, projects, and services at Cepsa, emphasized the importance of the new 2G plant in their Positive Motion strategy. This plant will set the European standard for green molecules and play a crucial role in rapidly decarbonizing sectors like aviation. The facility is designed to emit 75% less CO2 than a traditional biofuel plant and aims to achieve net zero emissions in the near future. Cepsa recognizes Topsoe as an excellent partner with reliable technology and a history of delivering on commitments, and they are eager to advance construction to ramp up production of this essential renewable fuel.
