Mr. Hanh, a 61-year-old man, had been suffering from osteoarthritis in both of his knee joints for the past two years. He experienced a lot of pain, difficulty walking, and ultimately had both knee joints replaced with artificial joints within a month.

On May 2, Dr. Le Dinh Khoa, the Head of the Department of Joint Reconstruction at the Center for Trauma and Orthopedics at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, reported that Mr. Hanh’s knee osteoarthritis had progressed to its final stage. The condition had led to almost complete destruction of the cartilage in both knees, resulting in bone-on-bone contact, stiffness, limited movement, and intense pain.

In order to alleviate Mr. Hanh’s pain and restore mobility, the doctor prescribed an artificial knee replacement. Due to underlying health conditions such as ischemia, diabetes, and long-term gout, the patient was advised to have one knee replaced at a time. The right knee, which was more severely damaged, was addressed first.

Using TraumaCad software, the doctor analyzed X-ray images to determine the appropriate type of artificial joint for Mr. Hanh’s body. The surgical procedure involved removing damaged bone ends and replacing them with artificial materials to allow for smooth movement of the knee joint and minimize pain.

Following the surgery, early exercise played a crucial role in Mr. Hanh’s recovery. The patient was prescribed a multi-modal pain relief method to facilitate post-operative rehabilitation. On the fifth day after the surgery, Mr. Hanh was discharged from the hospital, with improved mobility and reduced pain in his right knee.

Four to six months later, the left knee joint was also replaced using the same technique and artificial joint as the first surgery. Dr. Khoa emphasized the importance of early detection and proper treatment for knee osteoarthritis, highlighting the benefits of minimally invasive surgical methods and advanced artificial joints in improving patients’ quality of life.

By seeking medical care at reputable facilities and following recommended treatment plans, patients can effectively manage the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis and regain mobility.
