During a press conference in Tokyo, Admiral John Aquilino, the head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, expressed his concerns about the increase in China’s defense spending. He stated that this rise in military expenditure is worrisome, especially given China’s “failing” economy. Aquilino pointed to the turmoil in China’s real estate sector and questioned the veracity of the country’s official growth rates.

Aquilino emphasized that China is allocating significantly more funds to its military than the 7.2% increase it reported last month. Despite economic challenges, Aquilino noted, the Chinese government is consciously choosing to invest in military capabilities, a decision that alarms him. Aquilino also criticized China’s aggressive actions and rhetoric in the South and East China Seas, particularly concerning areas like the disputed Second Thomas Shoal and Taiwan.

He observed that China is pursuing an increasingly aggressive strategy to pressure Taiwan, which he finds concerning. Although the Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment, a Chinese military leader recently stated that China remains committed to resolving maritime disputes through dialogue while asserting its sovereignty.

Aquilino also condemned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s regime for prioritizing military spending over addressing food shortages in the country. He described the regime’s actions as “disgusting,” highlighting the lack of resources allocated to feeding the North Korean people despite economic challenges and sanctions. Aquilino emphasized the need for responsible allocation of resources to address critical issues affecting populations.
