Chelsea goalkeeper Gaga Slonina and San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell are amongst the players listed on the 21-man roster for the United States at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina. They are joined by their friends at Real Sociedad and Atlanta United, including Jonathan Gomez and Caleb Wiley. Six of the players on the team play club football abroad, including Hajduk Split midfielder Rocas Puxtas.
The USA’s Group B match in Ecuador takes place on Saturday 20th May followed by a match against Fiji on Tuesday 23rd May, and finally, a match against Slovakia on Friday 26th May. All three of the games will be kick off at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Mikey Vallas, the USA Under-20 coach, said “I’m really looking forward to having this group play against the best team in the world in Argentina. It is a great honor to represent our country at the World Cup. We accept the responsibility that comes with this opportunity.” Furthermore, “We are very grateful for the cooperation we have received from clubs at home and abroad to release players and shine on this global stage.”
The American team has qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina by winning the 2022 CONCACAF U20 Championship in Honduras. Philadelphia Union forward Quinn Sullivan was a top-scorer for the team, scoring six goals during the tournament.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup Positional Roster is made up of players from various clubs across the country, including Fulham, FC Dallas, Philadelphia Union, LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders FC and more.
