British company Space Solar is making strides in developing transmission technology for a space solar power plant. According to the company, they have achieved a breakthrough in wireless electricity transmission technology, demonstrating the viability of their 360-degree wireless transmission system.

In the electricity grid, maintaining balance between production and consumption is crucial. Solar and wind power production is weather-dependent and requires control power to regulate fluctuations. As renewable energy production increases, the capacity for control power must also increase.

Space Solar’s plans involve a satellite with solar panels and mirrors that direct light towards the panels, with energy transferred to Earth via microwaves. Various methods for wireless electricity transmission, including laser and microwave beams, are being considered for space solar power projects.

The company’s CEO, Martin Soltau, mentioned negotiations with SpaceX for rocket use, and their breakthrough with the Harrier demonstrator, the first 360-degree wireless transmission system. The technology allows for beam direction in all directions without separate moving parts, tested at the University of Belfast.

Numerous projects are underway globally to research, develop, and test the technology needed for space solar power. Caltech in the US has made progress with a small solar power plant pilot and transmission to Earth. Excitement surrounds the potential for 24-hour sunlight availability in space for energy production and transmission.
