On Thursday 25 April, a controversial bill was passed to deport illegal migrants from the UK to Rwanda, receiving Royal Assent and officially becoming law. Lord Speaker John McFall announced this in the upper house of the British Parliament. The law had been approved by Parliament on April 22. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had mentioned earlier that the first deportation flights would commence in 10-12 weeks, with monthly expulsions scheduled to start in the summer of 2024 until the flow of illegal migrants ceases. An agreement for the expulsion of migrants to Rwanda had been made in April 2022, including financial subsidies from the UK, which had been halted by the courts. In January 2024, reports emerged of Israel exploring the possibility of partially deporting Gaza Strip residents to Rwanda.
