Emmanuel Macron delivered a stirring speech at Sorbonne University to kick off the campaign for the European elections in June, warning that “Our Europe is mortal today. You can die. And it depends on our decisions.” He called for building a credible defense for the European continent, changing the economic model to avoid falling behind globally, and uniting Europeans under a common democratic, humanist, and liberal identity that is being challenged.

Macron emphasized the need for the EU to project itself as a power to prevent relegation in the face of global competition. He highlighted the importance of military cooperation, industrial investments, border protection, and maintaining social and environmental standards while fostering growth. With the rise of nationalist and populist parties, Macron stressed the urgency of ensuring peace and security on the continent.

The French president proposed initiatives to strengthen Europe’s position, including creating a European military academy, investing in European military equipment, doubling financial capacity, and becoming a world leader in key sectors by 2030. He also advocated for setting the digital age of majority at 15 years and emphasized the importance of a cultural battle over the EU’s identity and soul.

Macron’s speech, although programmatic and electoral in nature, addressed the need for massive strategic decisions to be made to secure Europe’s future. He called for responding to challenges through power, prosperity, and humanism while underscoring the critical moment facing Europe in shaping its destiny.
