The owners of The Gold & Silver Exchange in downtown Manistee are leaving the city after 13 years due to an ordinance banning bird feeders near their store. Co-owner Nikki Bromley expressed reluctance to leave but explained that the business was fined $500 for violating the ban. Despite efforts to petition for the ban to be reversed, the city remained firm. After having the fine reduced to $125, the business is still unable to afford daily fines and is now contemplating relocating to a nearby town.

The ban on bird feeders was implemented following complaints about the feeders taking up space and creating litter on the streets. Despite the petition with over 1,000 signatures, the city remained unmoved. The Gold & Silver Exchange owners are now exploring their next steps for the business, with possible plans to move to a neighboring town. The city declined to comment on the matter when contacted by 9 & 10 News.
