In debates regarding the merits of restricting smoking, libertarians are often on the losing end. The idea of a “nanny state” is supported by science, common sense, and public opinion. Similar arguments were made against compulsory seat belts in cars and helmets for motorcyclists, but now it is clear that these measures have had a positive impact.

The facts are not in favor of Big Tobacco. In the UK alone, an estimated 76,000 deaths each year are attributed to smoking. Back in 1950, an Oxford epidemiologist named Richard Doll was able to establish a definitive link between smoking and cancer. Despite efforts by tobacco companies to hide the truth, no reputable scientist has been able to refute Doll’s findings.

It is a well-known fact that two out of three people who fail to quit smoking will die prematurely. Smoking is also responsible for a vast majority of cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The strain that smoking-related illnesses place on the already stressed National Health Service is significant, costing billions annually.
