FIGO and IJGO have announced the release of a paper titled “Global Health Systems Strengthening: FIGO’s Strategic View on Reducing Maternal and Newborn Mortality Worldwide.” This paper, authored by the FIGO Committee on Health Systems Strengthening and Respectful Care, emphasizes the importance of strengthening health systems to achieve universal healthcare coverage and decrease maternal and newborn mortality rates globally. The goal of reducing maternal and newborn mortality is a global priority, and significant progress has been made over the past two decades.

Despite advancements, disparities in maternal and perinatal health persist, especially in low-income countries and marginalized populations within high-income countries. The article advocates for a more comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to maternal deaths to inform effective policy and health program decisions worldwide.

FIGO is dedicated to promoting health and equity for women, girls, and newborns. The organization is committed to improving maternal and perinatal outcomes globally, reducing healthcare disparities, and advancing research, education, advocacy, and capacity-building in obstetrics and gynecology. Health systems strengthening involves enhancing various aspects of the healthcare system, such as service delivery, workforce, information systems, access to medications, financing, and leadership and governance.
