India is preparing for its elections with almost 1 billion eligible voters, but controversy surrounds freedom of expression and censorship. Social network X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, was ordered by the Election Commission to remove political posts from elected politicians, parties, and candidates. X disagreed with the orders, stating that freedom of expression should extend to political speech.

The platform has notified affected users and appealed for transparency in publishing removal orders. As the election intensifies, India is cracking down on dissenting voices, particularly targeting Hindu nationalists who support Prime Minister Modi. Recently, Christian institutions have been pressured to remove religious elements and practices.

Musk is set to visit India to discuss plans for manufacturing Tesla vehicles with Modi. The ongoing issues with censorship and freedom of expression highlight the challenges facing India as it heads into the election period.
