Recent college graduate starts new business after mother’s diagnosis

VaLandria Smith-Lash, a recent graduate of Miami University, took action to address a dangerous skin illness by starting her own business. She began mixing shea butter and oils at the age of 14 to create a skin care cream to help her mother who was suffering from dry skin and hair loss due to Lupus. This business, called ‘Coarse Culture,’ became the first start-up at Miami University’s new Innovation College.

When VaLandria’s mother was diagnosed with Lupus, she took it upon herself to create a solution. She diligently experimented with various ingredients until she found a mixture that worked well – shea butter and oils. This small initiative soon grew into a full-fledged business venture, with VaLandria using a kitchen mixer to produce her products while still a teenager. By the time she graduated from Miami University, ‘Coarse Culture’ had become her main career focus.

Miami University is excited about the potential for student-led innovation, with President Gregory Crawford expressing his support for initiatives like VaLandria’s. He sees her success as the beginning of a trend, with many more students expected to launch their own businesses.
