The World Health Organization is utilizing artificial intelligence to offer essential health information via a human-like avatar. This initiative aims to provide access to basic health education and address global healthcare worker shortages. SARAH, known as Smart AI Resource Assistant for Health, is a virtual health worker programmed to interact with users in eight languages. SARAH can discuss various health topics such as mental health, tobacco use, and healthy eating, offering guidance and support 24/7.

While SARAH is designed to respond empathetically to users’ facial expressions, there are limitations to its knowledge and abilities. Despite its advanced technology, SARAH may not always provide accurate information. The WHO’s integration of AI technology like SARAH underscores the organization’s commitment to utilizing innovative solutions to improve global public health. This effort demonstrates the WHO’s dedication to leveraging new technologies to bridge gaps in healthcare access and information dissemination.
