On my way back from Dunedin to Queenstown, I make a pitstop at the Kawarau Bridge, a somewhat clichéd pilgrimage but one that must be done. This is where the madness of bungee jumping started, where people like you and I could take the plunge into a 50-meter gorge for the first time. A. J. Hackett and his mates had tested their elastic on smaller bridges before perfecting the math and physics and eventually jumping off the Eiffel Tower in Paris. From then on, Hackett’s name became synonymous with adventure and adrenaline. I admire his ethos of getting out there and getting on with it.
As my time in the Southern Hemisphere comes to an end, I realize it’s time to trade the fall season for spring in Croatia. The past week has been incredible, thanks to the Oakley boys for putting together an amazing rally with 16 single-use stages running flawlessly on time. Brandon, Kris… same time next year? I thought so.
