A study conducted by the Mozilla Foundation found that 80% of dating applications have the ability to share or sell personal information that users publish in their profiles for advertising purposes. The study also revealed that only three out of 25 dating apps analyzed were approved for data protection and privacy – Lex, eHarmony, and Happn. These apps were found to do a slightly better job of protecting personal information compared to others.

On the other hand, dating apps like Badoo, Muzz, Her, Tinder, OkCupid, Match, Hinge, Plenty of Fish, Bumble, Jdate, Elite, Scruff, OurTime, BlackPeopleMeet, and Grindr were among those labeled with ‘Privacy not included,’ indicating the lowest rating in terms of security. The study also revealed that dating apps are requesting information beyond just basic details like name and age, such as questions about family background and preferences.

The study highlighted concerns about the misuse of personal data by dating apps. For example, Grindr had a data breach that allowed an organization to track members of the clergy. Additionally, some apps were found to send user data to third parties without consent. The study also pointed out manipulative subscription practices in some apps and possible biases in matchmaking algorithms.

To protect their privacy, users are advised to be cautious about the information they share on dating apps. The Mozilla Foundation recommends treating dating profiles like LinkedIn profiles, only sharing photos and details that are necessary. Users should also limit application permissions and avoid linking social media accounts to their dating profiles. By taking these precautions, users can minimize the risk of their personal information being shared or sold without their consent.
