World Malaria Day 2024 is observed on April 25th each year to raise awareness about the serious mosquito-borne illness. This year’s theme, “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”, emphasizes the need to address inequalities in access to malaria prevention, detection, and treatment services. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to avoid complications or death from malaria.

Since its establishment by the World Health Organization in 2007, World Malaria Day has aimed to prevent and control this life-threatening disease. Symptoms of malaria typically appear 10-15 days after a mosquito bite and can include fever, chills, and headaches. Prevention measures include avoiding high-risk areas, wearing protective clothing, using insect repellents, and sleeping under nets.

High-risk groups for malaria include older adults, young children, pregnant women, and travellers from non-malarial areas. Anyone showing symptoms of malaria should seek immediate diagnosis through a parasitological test. By spreading awareness and practicing prevention measures, individuals can make a difference in the fight against malaria this World Malaria Day.
