Tomorrow’s Science Trailblazers: A STAT Virtual Event

Each year, STAT chooses a new class of Wunderkinds, showcasing stars of science and medicine who are in the midst of launching their careers. A livestream of the event will be embedded below at 1 p.m. ET for a conversation with past all-star Wunderkinds. The discussion will focus on where they are now, how their journeys have unfolded, and their most inspiring and innovative ideas.

The event will feature Sponsor Introduction by Lauren Averett Byers, M.D., professor of thoracic/head & neck medical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Koichi Takahashi, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Featured speakers will include Nicole M. Gaudelli, Ph.D., an entrepreneur in residence (EIR) at GV (formerly Google Ventures) and the inventor of the Adenine Base Editor, a gene-editing tool with potential applications in treating various genetic diseases. Kellie Jurado, Ph.D., presidential assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania, researches immune system development and response to viral infections during early life. Bianca Jones Marlin, Ph.D., Herbert and Florence Irving assistant professor of cell research at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, investigates the biology of how trauma and stress can be inherited across generations. Siddhartha Roy, Ph.D., assistant professor at Rutgers University, helped raise awareness about the Flint Water Crisis and now leads a lab dedicated to ensuring safe and accessible drinking water for all. The event will be moderated by Nicholas St. Fleur, general assignment reporter and associate editorial director of events at STAT.
