Uber Eats food delivery drivers to go on strike next week

Food deliverers who work for the Uber Eats platform are planning a strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, organized by the Brussels courier collective The House of Deliverers with the support of the Christian trade union ACV. The couriers are demanding a pay increase of at least 2 euros per trip and 0.5 euros per kilometer traveled, citing that fees have not been raised since 2019 despite a 20 percent inflation rate.

In addition to the pay increase, the couriers are criticizing Uber for not consulting with them on their employment status and the government’s lack of action in this area. Despite a ruling by the Brussels labor court last year that meal deliverers should be considered employees, there has been no change in their status. The strike is expected to involve “several hundred” couriers in Brussels and other cities like Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp.

The couriers have also requested a consultation with Uber, but have not yet received a response. The strike action aims to bring attention to the issues faced by food deliverers and to push for better working conditions and fair pay. Strike actions are planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, with a campaign also scheduled at Uber’s Belgian headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday.
