Advanced Micro Devices announced a new series of semiconductors designed for AI-enabled business laptops and desktops, aiming to increase its market share in the “AI PC” industry. The chips are set to be available in platforms from HP and Lenovo in the second quarter of 2024, according to a press release from AMD.

AI-enabled PCs have the capability to execute large-language models and applications powered by AI directly on the device, foregoing the need for cloud resources. AMD’s latest offerings include the Ryzen PRO 8040 Series for business laptops and mobile workstations, as well as the AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series desktop processor for business users. The company’s shares saw a more than 2% increase in early trading in response to this announcement.

Industry experts believe that the introduction of AI PCs could lead to a rebound in the PC market, with consumers showing interest in upgrading their systems to include these advanced capabilities. The demand for advanced semiconductors to develop and run complex AI programs has surged with the emergence of generative AI technology.

In the AI PC market, AMD faces stiff competition from industry giants like Intel and Nvidia, particularly known for its leadership in GPUs. In January, AMD launched the Ryzen 8000G Series of desktop chips tailored to handle the demanding workloads associated with AI tasks. Meanwhile, Nvidia introduced its “GeForce RTX SUPER” desktop GPUs for AI PCs, with manufacturers like Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung planning to release laptops featuring Nvidia’s technology.

Intel also made waves in January by announcing its expectation to ship around 40 million AI PCs in 2024 alone. This fierce competition is driving innovation and advancements in the AI PC industry, with major players vying for a larger share of the market.
