Policymakers and technology experts from 15 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region gathered to discuss issues related to the development of artificial intelligence at AI Connect II. The Regional Conference took place in Ho Chi Minh City from April 22 – 24 and was organized by the US Department of State, Atlantic Council, and the Department of Science and Technology. Nearly 100 participants, including policymakers, senior managers, technology company representatives, scholars, and regional organizations, shared insights on the research and development of AI, experiences, and solutions tailored to the region.
During the conference, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy highlighted the potential of the Asia-Pacific region to become a hub for AI development. He emphasized the importance of information exchange and international cooperation among member countries to ensure sustainable AI growth. While acknowledging the benefits of AI in areas such as economic development and healthcare, Mr. Duy also stressed the need to address concerns related to socio-economic and ethical aspects of AI.
Vietnam has developed a National Strategy and Policy to capitalize on the benefits of AI while mitigating risks. The country aims to encourage responsible AI research and development, integrate AI into sectors like transportation and healthcare, enhance human resources, adjust policies and regulations, develop standards, and engage in international AI cooperation. The conference aims to support low- and middle-income countries in Southeast Asia in participating more effectively in global discussions on AI policy.
The OECD has recognized the transformative potential of AI in various sectors while acknowledging the challenges and ethical considerations it poses. Governments are urged to ensure that AI systems are designed in a manner that respects human values and laws, prioritizing human safety and privacy. While there are no formal international principles on AI, countries developing AI policies often refer to the OECD principles. AI Connect II seeks to promote responsible and inclusive AI development in the Asia-Pacific region in alignment with OECD guidelines.
