The Cervantes Institute and Apple Music have teamed up to launch a project involving twelve prominent artists to find the best Spanish song lyrics in history. This initiative coincides with Spanish Language Day at the United Nations, celebrated on April 23rd. Artists such as Andrés Calamaro, Bunbury, and Russian Red have selected their favorite Spanish lyrics, which are available in playlists on Apple Music along with detailed comments by the artists themselves.
Each curated playlist features highlighted song lyrics, the name of the author, and comments by the artist who selected the songs. Additionally, the lyrics of most of the songs in the tribute playlists are synchronized on Apple Music to allow users to follow along or sing them.
The Cervantes Institute has also joined in the celebration by becoming a curator on Apple Music, offering playlists such as ‘The word in music’, ‘Learn Spanish with music’, and selections by Spanish writer Luis Mateo Díez, the most recent Cervantes Prize winner. The Institute aims to showcase the cultural richness and diversity of Spanish language music, bridging the gap between high culture and popular culture.
Luis García Montero, director of the Cervantes Institute, stated that this collaboration with Apple Music aims to highlight the cultural heritage and talent of creation represented by Spanish songs. He emphasized that songs in Spanish play a vital role in spreading the language worldwide and are a significant part of our cultural tradition. Montero also mentioned that the collaboration with Apple Music will help students around the world learn Spanish through music, showcasing the value of words in music and their contribution to language learning.
