Google has addressed a vulnerability in the Android TV operating system that allowed unauthorized access to users’ Gmail accounts without requiring a password or PIN. Android TV is Google’s operating system for smart TVs and streaming devices, requiring users to log in with a Google account. Earlier this year, content creator Cameron Gray highlighted this security flaw in a video, demonstrating how it could compromise user information. By using a web browser and APK for Google Chrome on Android TV, Gray showed how malicious actors could access Gmail accounts.

After being alerted by US Senator Ron Wyden, Google conducted a review of TV streaming technology providers’ privacy practices to address the issue. The company acknowledged the possibility of criminals overriding default settings to access restricted Google applications on TVs through logged-in accounts. Google stated that most devices running the latest software versions no longer allowed this behavior, and they are working on a solution for the rest of the devices.
