A recent study published online analyzed 215 studies to determine the most effective types of exercise for managing symptoms of depression. The study compared walking, running, yoga, tai chi, qi gong, aerobic exercise, and strength training, as well as the effectiveness of exercise when combined with therapy and antidepressants.

The findings of the study revealed that for individuals using exercise as the sole treatment for depression, walking, running, yoga, strength training, and dancing were the most effective options. When exercise was combined with talk therapy, yoga, tai chi, and aerobic exercise were particularly beneficial, especially for men and older adults. Additionally, individuals who took antidepressants and engaged in any form of exercise showed better outcomes compared to those who only took medication.

The researchers emphasized that while high-intensity exercise was most helpful for depression, any consistent exercise is beneficial. The duration of each workout and frequency of exercise did not significantly impact the benefits of exercise for managing depression.

It is important to note that the information provided in this study is meant to aid readers in understanding the potential benefits of exercise in managing depression. It is always recommended to consult with a qualified clinician or healthcare provider for personalized medical advice.
