The CNN editorial series, Call to Earth, is dedicated to reporting on the environmental challenges facing our planet along with the solutions. Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative has collaborated with CNN to raise awareness and educate people about key sustainability issues, inspiring positive action.

The World Nature Photography Awards recently announced a winner for a dramatic photo of two gannets fighting for a fish off Scotland’s Shetland Islands. The winning image by Tracey Lund captured this intense moment and was selected from thousands of submissions to receive a $1,000 prize. Lund took the photo while on vacation using a DSLR camera in a waterproof housing that she lowered into the sea.

Thousands of gannets diving into the sea to catch fish created a spectacular sight that Lund was fortunate to capture. The World Nature Photography Awards included various categories such as animal portraits, plants and fungi, invertebrate, amphibian, reptile, and mammal behavior. Ivan Pedretti from Italy won the category of Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments with a magical photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland.

The World Nature Photography Awards were launched in 2020 with a focus on promoting photography and supporting the planet by planting a tree for each entry to the competition. According to the organization, photography can influence people to see the world differently and change their habits for the planet’s benefit. The co-founder of the WNPAs, Adrian Dinsdale, expressed joy in seeing the outstanding quality of entries for the 2024 awards and how these images continue to be breathtaking.
