Kai Tak Sports Park Limited and ASM Global have announced a late-winter testing period for Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park, a $4 billion multi-venue sports district project. The project, which has taken almost a decade to complete, is set to open in early 2025. The 70-acre district’s main attraction is the Kai Tak Stadium, a 50,000-seat venue with a retractable roof and a flexible playing surface known as “the Pearl of the Orient”. Alongside the stadium, there is a 10,000-capacity indoor sports arena and a 5,000-spectator public sports ground for school events and athletic competitions.

ASM Global has been responsible for project management, premium sales, and programming for the past five years and will continue to operate the district once it opens. Populous designed the district and the venues, with Simon Kwan & Associates as the architect of record. ADI Limited handled the landscape architecture design and Arup provided engineering services for the project. The district is centered around the Kai Tak Sports Avenue, a pathway that connects the venues and features various amenities such as restaurants, retail shops, jogging trails, a health and wellness center, a bowling center, and a climbing wall.

The district’s focus on sustainability includes the integration of solar panels on each facility, green roofscapes in the design, and an extensive network of electric charging stations throughout the area. Smart city initiatives will also be implemented, including an intelligent building and car management system, Wi-Fi hotspots, an indoor positioning system, and mobile applications for facility booking and wayfinding within the district.
