Apple’s AirPods have always been updated with new and useful features through software updates. With the announcement of iOS 18 expected at WWDC on June 10, AirPods may receive even more health options. Apple has already integrated heart health features in the Apple Watch, walking steadiness-detection on the iPhone for mobility, and safety features like fall detection and emergency SOS. The addition of health-related features to AirPods could further solidify Apple’s presence in the health and wellness space.

In a recent episode of One More Thing, rumors about upcoming AirPods were discussed, including a potential hearing aid mode that may launch with iOS 18. There have also been talks about integrating more sensors into AirPods, such as an EEG for detecting brain activity. Although Apple filed a patent in 2023 showcasing this technology, it has not yet been implemented.

There were previous rumors about the AirPods Pro getting a heart rate and body temperature sensor, similar to what other earbuds like the Sennheiser Momentum Sport already offer. Consolidating all this data in a workout app is beneficial for users, eliminating the need to wear both a watch and earbuds simultaneously during workouts.

AirPods could play a significant role in Apple’s health ambitions, considering they are one of the most affordable options in Apple’s wearable line. The exploration of integrating advanced health features into AirPods demonstrates Apple’s commitment to transitioning its wearables from entertainment devices to full-fledged health tools. Although these patents may not materialize into finished products, the innovation and exploration undertaken by Apple are commendable.
