Albany defensive star and potential NFL Draft pick AJ Simon tragically passes away at the age of 25

Amitral “AJ” Simon, a former University at Albany defensive lineman and 2024 NFL Draft prospect, passed away at the age of 25. He had an impressive college career with the Great Danes, recording 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks in his final season which helped the team achieve an 11-4 record and their first conference title. His death was announced by the school, although the cause was not disclosed.

Albany described Simon as a tremendous young man and a great teammate both on and off the field. He was seen as a role model during his time at the university and his loss was deeply felt by the football program. Head coach Greg Gattuso expressed his sorrow over Simon’s passing, offering condolences to his family and calling him a friend.

Simon had declared for the 2024 NFL Draft in December after completing his two seasons at Albany. He was ranked as the 448th prospect by ESPN and had earned first-team All-CAA honors. Apart from his on-field success, Simon was also recognized for his academic achievements, making the CAA’s commissioner’s academic honor roll with a 3.0 grade-point average.

Recently, Simon had a pre-draft visit with the New England Patriots according to NBC. His potential for a promising football career was clear, but his untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.AJ Simon’s impact on his team and university will be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
