Rising scientists in the Bronx showcased their discoveries at an annual science fair on Thursday at the New York Institute for Special Education. The event was specifically for visually impaired preschool to 12th-grade students who have been conducting research, collecting data, and building projects around topics such as solar energy, invisible ink, and slime since February. The theme of the fair was “chemical reaction,” and all displays were presented in braille.

Nestor Alfonso, an 11th-grade student, expressed his excitement about being able to participate in an event typically reserved for public school students despite their visual impairment. The opportunity to showcase their projects and discoveries was a unique and empowering experience for the students involved.

The fair provided a platform for visually impaired students to share their passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It was a testament to their determination, creativity, and commitment to learning despite facing challenges related to their disability. The event highlighted the importance of inclusivity and the acknowledgement that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can make valuable contributions to the field of science.

Through hands-on experiments, innovative projects, and engaging presentations, the students demonstrated their knowledge and skills in various scientific disciplines. The fair not only celebrated their achievements but also inspired them to continue pursuing their interests in science and exploring the world around them. It was a reminder that with determination and support, anything is possible, even for those facing unique obstacles.
